New NAA/NMHC charts are now available to help property owners and managers make better decisions about familial status policies.

The four charts provide a decision tree and a list of do’s and don’ts covering familial status and:

• Swimming pool rules
• Curfews and supervision
• Amenities
• Occupancy

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in rental housing based on specific protected classes, including familial status. Courts review whether a housing provider discriminates based on familial status by inquiring whether families with children are treated differently.

The charts were created by Nadeen Green, Senior Counsel, For Rent Media Solutions. They provide practical guidance based on the NAA/NMHC white paper, “Fair Housing: Familial Status and Occupancy,” written by Michael W. Skojec, Esq., and Michael P. Cianfichi of Ballard Spahr LLP.
